  • Villages in the Mountains of Gran Canaria

Where the Older Generations Keep Traditions Alive

    1. Home
    2. Villages

The rural villages of Gran Canaria, with their white washed stone houses and old churches, afford the best views of the surrounding mountains and the beautiful countryside.

Look up Whilst Sightseeing, You will see So Much More!

A leisurely stroll around the quiet narrow streets and one will soon realise that few locals are to be seen, with the only signs of life being the free wandering dogs and lazy cats. The older generations retire indoors, whilst the younger visit on weekends for family celebrations and meals.

Ingenio de Santa Lucia

Ingenio de Santa Lucia, is the hamlet where you will find the Bohemian Hideaway. Although arriving here is an uphill drive, the actual hamlet is nestled in a palm tree valley 535 meters above sea level, which rewards the finca with fantastic views of the encompassing mountains.

The hamlet has records dating back to the 16th century and was known for its sugarcane mill. Today, the only agricultural farming is the harvesting of the olive trees in September. We guesstimate that there are just 40 houses in the immediate heart of the hamlet, and it's a rare occasion to see any of the locals leave their homes. There is one small shop in the hamlet that sells the essentials and doubles as a locals bar on Friday and Saturday nights.

Santa Lucia

This is the village closest to our hamlet and part of the Santa Lucia de Tirajana region. Its a sleepy picturesque village with white washed stone houses and a small domed chapel built in 1898, the Iglesia de Santa Lucia.

In the village you will find bakeries, restaurants, small 'autoservicio' grocery shops, a pharmacy, ATM machine, and a tiny market (literally 4 stalls!) every Sunday morning until 14:00.

Tunte

Tunte is the capital of the San Bartolome de Tirajana, the largest region on the island. Its a small town with a few bars, shops, ATM's, and bakeries, the latter with a nice outdoor terrace to enjoy fresh pastries with your cafe.

Its worth getting lost exploring the small streets by foot and discovering the different views of the surroundings. For those who enjoy wine, there is a large bodega with tours and tastings for a reasonable price.
